You are offered ownership of a powerful convertible. You can choose Top Up or Top Down and, independent of the first choice,  Silent Exhaust or UNMUFFLED EXHAUST. But, once you choose, it stays that way. Forever. And you have to daily drive it. What’s your choice?

Top down, unmuffled. All other possible choices are incorrect.

Silent exhaust. Because I like my neighbors. Well, most of them.

Top down, unmuffled. Anything else is convertibling wrong.

Top down. Unmuffled.

Also I want tunnels on my commute. For reasons.

911 Turbo S Cab. Top down. Unmuffled. Glorious turbo flat 6 noises for the rest of my life.

Turbos muffle your engine sound though...

(I’ll still allow this because that strikes me as a fantastic thing to daily)

Interesting. That’s 100% more “silent exhaust” responses than I was expecting...

What about your convertible top? Up or down?

Well, aside from the GT3 there are no more naturally aspirated 911s, so I decided for this exercise to go with the most powerful one possible. FWIW, my second choice would be an S2000, which doesn’t sound as good.

Silent convertible you say? I wouldn’t say “no” to it.

Mmm... Now that I think of it, every convertible Porsche is a turbo or Turbo now :( Now I’m sad.

The S2000s at autocross have an interesting sound. It’s a similar firing order to lots of V8s, but it revs almost twice as high. The result sounds like a V8 revving to 4k when the engine is actually turning 8k. It’s got the midrange of a V8 but without the distinctive burble at lower revs. And that midrange is actually when it’s being wrung out to the maximum. Not really what I was expecting when I first heard one shift at redline.

I agree with the choice of the Porsche. A GT3 Touring Cabrio (no big wing, just the 4.0 flat six and no roof or muffler) would be amazing.

Top down, of course, or what’s the point. But, I never want to own an unmuffled car, especially for a daily. Ugh, that would pummel my ear drums.

I’ve seen one of those driving in the wild and they’re actually pretty loud. Makes cool “spaceship” electric motor noises.

Fair, reasoned point. Realistic. I’ll take back your Oppo card now...

I kid, I kid. I’d probably make the same choice for the sake of being “professional” on my way to work.

It’s been awhile since I heard an S at high revs without an awful exhaust, but that sounds about right. The S is the only convertible I would realistically want to own, but sub-12k AP1s are starting to be sketchy...at the end of the day it’s a nearly 20-year-old Honda, typically with 150k miles or more, and would need the care an old Prelude or Integra does at that age.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > way2blu does a rev update
02/04/2018 at 20:29

I’ve never owned a convertible, so I’d have to say top up, since I have to drive in the rain sometimes.

I think my Camry-engined base-model MR2 is plenty good-sounding for 1/10 of the price of the market-average S2000.

Something something intake 2 feet behind the driver’s ears something something...

If it were a convertible it’d be automotive perfection.

No way I’m the first to suggest it. I didn’t expect that at all. Top up because realistically traffic is super unpredictable on my commute so drive fast to stay dry in the rain won’t work. Also rolling down the windows is good enough for me. And loud exhaust because if i get sick of it I can just drove with headphones in.

I was going to go top down unmuffled but that would be disconcerting in a thunderstorm. Oh whatever it is better to live and die than to just be dead. Top down unmuffled. I want a Saab Sonett, Abarth 1100 Scorpion Boano, or an Austin Healey Sprite.

Hmmm, I choose top down and muffled, I want to hear the wind a bit with my new, “convertible” :P This could be interesting, the interior is pretty much weatherproof.

Probably not the mass market customer here... muffler delete, cats only, wide open. I know that doesn’t sell... but I love it. And it’s safer because pedestrians can hear you!

Top up (UK weather), muffled exhaust (because I’m not that antisocial).

For the convertible in question, how about an NSX-T?

Kinja'd!!!

Or perhaps a Singer if the NSX doesn’t count as high-powered.

Please do ask, there are lots of other solutions to getting an MR2 back on the road. Toyota V6 engines, the 2ZZ from the Matrix/Corolla XRS (basically the Toyota answer to the K20), and the EV swap I linked are all great fun.
